Hi

I've worked in H&S for 11yrs now, have my NEBOSH Diploma and have really got into and enjoy behavioural based safety.

Because of this I would like to do a psychology course and i am wondering if anyone knows which kind of psychology course I should do so I can further my career in the path of behavioural based safety?

Many thanks for your help with this

Sarah

The BPS is the best place to start.

If you want to start with basic psychology courses (which you often need before more advanced behaviour based courses) then look at the OU.

You can visit university of derby website, they have some related courses in Human factors and organizational behaviour with some module in behavioural safety, though they are all under Ergonomics. Visit ergonomics society website.i guess you will get some help.

You could try the University of Bath which has an MSc Risk, Health and Science Communication which may be of interest. It is run from the department of psychology and looks like you can tailor the course to specialise in two of the three areas.

I've not taken the course myself and not researched it fully but it looks like it may be worth investigation.

Hi Sarah - I'm in a similar situation to yourself and have been looking around for decent (and reasonably priced!) psychology/behavioural safety courses. I wondered had you made any progress with finding something? I have checked out the OU and some of the psychology course feedback wasn't too favourable - I'm based up in Edinburgh so distance-learning is probably the way I'll have to go...if you turn up any gems please do let me know!
Cheers,
Sarah

Go to the OU website (www.open.ac.uk) and they can let you download the courses for that subject.

Good morning Princey and others

Just in case you wanted to give yourselves a head start and begin to look at workplace psychology, which I admit is a very fascinating and interesting topic, I use a book by Peter Warr on Psychology at Work. This is an easily understandable read whilst explaining the basis and uses of psychology in the workplace. The stufdents find it an easy read book that you can dip in and out of. Unlike some indicative reading suggested in this area.

It is not just about behavioural safety but discusses human performance, motivation, the recruitment and selection involvement as well as other areas of psychological need. The book also dispels some myths and gives reasons which are clear and valuable when beginning to learn about this subject area.

Peter Warr Psychology at Work Penguin Books ISBN 978 0 14 100010 7

Hope this is of use

Regards

Tim Briggs
