As part of on going works we have been asked to remove some tiles that have been identified as white asbestos. I am not 100% sure where we stand with our legal position here as we are not licensed contractor. Although task will be fully assessed, what level of minimum competency and training our team should have to carry this out? Not intention of doing this any other way than by the book!!

Any ideas?

Well that wasn't helpful was it?

Not enough information really.

Is it AIB ceiling tiles? In which case a licence is required.
Is it floor tiles? In which case chances are you can do it yoursleves so long as you follow the relevant sheet in Asbestos Essentials (a23) -see link to AE below.

As for training. It sounds like you are in the building / maintenance trade in which case I would suggest all your lads needs asbestos awarness training so that they can recognise asbestos, know the risks, know what work they can do, what to do if they discover it etc.

AE gives a lot of info on what is required. PM if you want more info. I give asbestos awareness training.

"White Asbestos" tiles is not an accurate, appropriate or safe description. You need a sampling and determination from an accredited body to tell you what the ACM (Asbestos Containing Material) is.
Only then can you determine whether or not you can conduct the work in accordance with the Asbestos Task Manual ("the book" perhaps?).
