In my new job I've started to help set-up systems for an enginners workshop that our staff and (mature) students will be using. I'm conscious that we'll need to risk assess and I'm also familiar with the requirements of PUWER. I'm training the technicians to do the RA's but I'm looking for any specific guidance that you folks can offer me because some of the kit I haven't worked with before and I want to be as helpful to the staff as possible. The following kit will be in there and my questions follow them:
-Compressed air line (127L tank) - maintenance/inspection requirements? (will it need a WSE under PSSR as contents is 'air'?)
-Welding equipment - the requirements for storage of cylinders and use of PTW required? Flashback arrestors needed? Also, any standards to work to for PPE selection, etc.
-Lathes and milling machines - I understand the requirement for fixed guards around dangerous bits and competent staff to carry out repairs, but are there any statutory maintenance/inspection intervals other than manufacturers guidance?
Any pointers much appreciated.

Get hold of a copy of BS4163:2007 - H&S for design technology in schools and similar establishments. Although it is aimed at DT workshops it is full of useful H&S advice for most types of machinery used in teaching environments. Ideal for risk assessments and auditing. Also get in touch with CLEAPSS, they have good advice, auditing tools and model risk assessments for DT workshops. If your establishment is not a member of CLEAPSS you may be able to purchase some of their info as a non member. There is no harm in asking.

If the volume multiplied by the pressure in bar exceeds 250, then the answer is yes, it will need a WSE. stel669 wrote:-Welding equipment - the requirements for storage of cylinders and use of PTW required? If these are cylinders of shielding gas for MIG/MAG or TIG then you don't need flashback arrestors. If they are oxy-acetylene kit then yes, on both gas lines. Eye protection needs to be chosen with regard to BS EN 169, which has tables to enable you to choose the right shade number.

If you have milling machines and lathes you will almost certainly have metalworking fluids. You will need to consider the potential health hazards from these. Airborne exposure to aerosol is one hazard, dermatitis due to both the defatting effect (irritant contact dermatitis) and biocides, etc. (allergic contact dermatitis) is another hazard you will need to risk assess.
