I am just about to embark on the installation of fire extinguishers to all our site locations; they will be numbering upwards of 120 installations.

We have been provided with the drawing, that outline the locations of the portable fire extinguisher installations. Co2, Foam, Powder, Water.

Can someone please inform me as to the correct height mounted extinguishers should be?

I appreciate your assistance.

Thanking you

Paul

From memory, larger extinguishers (9 litre water, AFFF) should be mounted about 1.0 m above FFL. Lighter ones (e.g. 2.5 kg CO2) about 1.5 m (shoulder height).

Are these heights actually documented anywhere? ACoP or BS etc (I don't want to pay £120 to find out!) as even the link above conflicts with itself;

"fire extinguishers should normally be sited in prominent positions on brackets or stands"
"1m from the floor for heavier units and 1.5 m for smaller units"
Cleary in the case of stands, neither apply, but to be fair the advice is qaulified with 'normally' and 'consider...'

We have had differing advice from "you must" install as above to a rule of thumb "about hip height" or "below shoulder height" respectively (thats for an average person).
I don't think there is any need to get the tape measure out, if its factories full of "burly blokes" you could apply the guidance to letter. If on the other hand it is (for example) predominantly female environment who are generally of average lower stature you may wish to consider slighty lower levels.

Personally I think a figure of 1.0 or 1.5 is far two prescritive. It would have been more useful (if required at all) to give a range - say 600-1000 for the larger types etc.

Guide available at:
http://www.communities.g...ents/fire/pdf/158124.pdf
(Further guidance on fire risk assessment and fire precautions Part 2 -page 58 •)

“They should be placed on a dedicated stand or hung at a convenient height so that people can easily lift them off (at about 1m for larger extinguishers, 1.5m for smaller ones, to the level of the handle)”

the joys of an edit feature eh.

The last post should have state that guidance in the Republic of Ireland is that extinguishers should be no higher than 1.1 metres off the ground.
