Hello all, just like alot of people on the forum i've just passed my NEBOSH general and I'm looking for an opportunity to swich careers. I'm a plumber/gas engineer, been on the tools for 19 years. seen alot of stuff that I now understand the true implications of if something had gone wrong. looking forward to the challenges of making other trades see the dangers around them and acting accordingly. I've been advised that if I get my construction certificate, then lack of experiance won't be such a pain to get over and doors will open. true or false? any useful advice is welcome!

NEBOSH Quals alone will not open doors - you need some experience to back up the qualification at either cert or dip level.
You should proceed with your NEBOSH Cons Cert though, but join IOSH and contact the branch closest to where you live where you can network for any opportunities that may come up.

Welcome
I agree with John. If you have the funds continue with NESBOSH Cons.
Where are you based?

Thanks for the replys. I'm based in Derbyshire in a place called Ilkeston. I have joined IOSH as a affiliate member. I posted my CV off and I hope it's enough to get me technician status. I'll look into doing the construction cert. I used a company in Derby so i'll give them a call...

Dizz, i have been in the Demolition industry for almost 30 years now, i have my Asbestos removal and supervisors certificste, HGV, 360 excavators cerificate, wprked my way through the ranks, been in office for the past 15 years preparing Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Health & Safety Plans etc, passed my NEBOSH National 2 years ago and am now Health & Safety advisor for the company, without the experience, i feel that you will struggle, i feel that all of our operatives look up to me, because i started on the tools and gradually worked my way up the ladder, at least if they ask me a quastion, i can answer, if you think that by simply taking your construction certificate this will open more doors, errrrr, i think that i would think again, experiance is a must, the certificate merely depicts the fact that you meet the criteria for passing exams set by NEBOSH, but mate, out here in the real world, we need to know far more than what is taught by the NEBOSH courses.

Hi Dizz,
Some forum users are way too up their own (you guess)!!!
I started my first health and safety role this week after almost 25 years "on the tools". I self funded the construction cert and the environmental management cert and went without luxuries. Some employers can actually see outside the box full of shiny suits and self importance. I am still receiving interview requests (had one today off Enterprise) because of my experience on-site and a half decent C.V.
My advice: Be committed, Be focussed, apply for everything you see regardless of distance or experience required and ignore 'some' of the pompous "experts" who can't spell on here.
All the best and if you want a bit of unprofessional advice then feel free to contact me. DNW

Tat, you have mail...
DNW, I'll post my CV to Enterprise, you never know! and thanks for the offer of advice i'll keep you in mind.
Cheers, Paul
