Hi All,

I was at a mechanics garage yesterday and had a chat with the owner about his safety... I thought about it am looking at expanding my knowledge about this and wondered if anyone has ANY information about safety for Mechanics?

Thanks in advance

For a knowledge of general engineering workshops, a good place to start is with this publication:

For more targeted advice look at the HSE motor vehicle repair microsite:

I noticed that the HSE had issued a safety alert yesterday on short bed scissor lifts used in the MVR industry. Might be worth checking your mechanic's is not affected. http://www.hse.gov.uk/sa...tins/mvrscissorlifts.htm

Have you considered the many chemicals that you will find in the average mechanics workplace? Many of these will represent hazards to health and will need to be controlled.

I recently encountered a training college teaching student mechanics to wear completely unsuitable gloves as hand protection against the many different chemicals that they might encounter.
