Morning, wondered if anyone could advise on CSCS/CPCS operatives cards, if a plant operator holds a Blue CPCS card, this allows him access to construction sites for plant operating reasons, however, if when excavator work is slow, this plant operator were to assist with labouring duties, does the CPCS card act as a CSCS, or should the plant operator hold both?

It depends on two things IMHO - firstly what your own systems are and secondly what the attitude is of the Principal Contractor if they are not one and the same. At least one member of the UKSG is starting to question job titles when they do not correspond to their CPCS card eg in their opinion a general labourer who has say a dumper ticket is a plant operator not a labourer as they do not have a CSCS card for labouring. I believe this dilema has been recognised by the funding bodies and you can get grants for funding a trade NVQ. regards Yul

Thank you for your input, my honest opinion is that he should hold both cards, but our clients appear to have not noticed this, or they are in fact quite happy with the situation, i didnt want to approach our clients about this matter, until i am sure of the facts and if their could potential be a problem, then rectify it, prior to someone elses safety advisor asking the same question. Think i will be belt and braces on this one. Cheers.
