Hi, need some advice as this area is outside my normal scope of knowledge or working practice.

Currently I am trained to erect and inspect Aluminium Scaffold Towers. When I attended the course I was informed that aluminium towers should be taken down after use and not left up or erected for long periods of time even if regulary inspected every seven days when not in use. A customer wishes to have installed a tower using conventional metal scafolding poles as you would find on a normal construction site for use for TV filming. The company that supplied the scaffolding will erect the structure but not inspect it on a weekly basis as is necessary. The only difference is that the tower would not be constructed of aluminium fixed pieces but of steel.

I am right in understanding that I am not qualified to inspect the tower?
How long can a aluminium tower be left in place if inspected every seven days?
What qualifications do you need to be able to erect a scaffolding tower (not aluminium)?

I am going to suggest they hire in a aluminium tower so that I can inspect but unsure the period of time it can be left up. They plan to have the tower left in place for six months. The tower would be in a secured area so have no problems with unauthorised use or access.

Many thanks for any help.

Mate as a safety advisor for a demolition company, if we were on a long Pre Refurbishment strip out contract, we would have towers up for long periods of time, i would implement the Scaff Tag system, this would mean an unsafe insert tag fitted to the tower at initial erection, then when safe to use, the safe to use insert fitted into the tag, we expect our competent person to inspect the towers each morning, prior to the towers being used, entries would be made onto a scaffold check log by the competent person, you may say that you will not have a competent person available, errr this is an area that you need to address then, as long as there is a competent person to check the scaffold and sign it off, hey no problems. (Well i sincerely hope not a).

Thanks Rick,

I will be checking the tower when it will be used as wont be used every day or on a regular basis. I am trained on aluminium towers not steel scaffold type design. I am unsure of the differences between the two. Suggesting that they use aluminium towers as will use our safe tag system we operate on site for any equipment and I know that I am qualified to inspect. Just unsure if there is a time period that aluminium towers can be left up even if inspected every seven days or as required.
