Oysters and other shellfish from class B beds normally go through a 42-hour purification process to eliminate faecal bacteria. UV exposure is effective in this respect, but does not eliminate protozoan parasitessuch as Cryptosporidia.

Does anybody have information about such infections acquired from consumption of shellfish in the UK?

There is a literature on C parvum from bivalves.

Depurination is the usual, and perhaps only, routine control measure but i wage that teh cuaseof most problems will be post harvest rather than source contamination caused by C parvum contamination of depurination water and/or the less than perfect water of later storage conditions are the product enters the commercial and retail food chain.

It is too much for this forum and requires specialist microbiological advice.

Feel free to PM if you wish to take this further.
