Hi. I am looking at providing basic fire safety training for employees. We are a medium sized construction and maintenance section. i am looking at doing this annulay and am interested in what other people do? my aproach is to deliver a presentation on the hazards of fire, local arrangements if discovering a fire escape routes etc. outline what each of the fire extinguishers does and when to use them, or not. And then the old favourite of a video. Timescales about 1 hour per year and at staff induction. In everyones opinion do you think this will be adequate?

Being in the construction and manitenance sector the your employees are more than average going to be faced with a fire situation. So if they are visiting other sites that your company doesn't own then they would need to make sure they are familiar with the local evacuation procedure(fire assembly point , nearest fire exits etc)

Hand on practical training with a co2 and water extinguisher would also be of benefiet maybe taslking to the company that services your fire extinguisher may be able to offer to come along and give a demonstarion.

make sure that you cover the prevention of fire as i guess your employees may be carrying out hot works so ensuring the work area is clear hot work permits are used (if operated at the site) and the work area is checked at least as a minimum 30 mins after the hot work has been completed.

make sure that everyone signs for the training and keep these records as the fire enforcement officer may well want to see them.
