Hello,

I recently passed IOSH managing safely certificate and I'm working on additional qualifications within H&S. I would like to start getting involved in this department, but it's really hard to get anywhere as I don't have much required experience so far. Everywhere I try, I'll get knocked back due to lack of experience.

Can anyone give me some advice how to gain experience? I'm based in Scotland, there is plenty of H&S positions available, but with no experience I don't have looking. Every advice will be much welcome.

Many thanks
Jacob

Morning Jacob

Whilst in the recession even those with experience are having difficulties finding opprotunities.

Just keep doing what you are doing and gain the qualifications. Perhaps try voluntary work to gain some experience.

Good luck.

Emsie.

Jacob

just to back up emsie, i first had a taste of H&S years ago and after passing my General Cert i felt ready to make the world a better place but i suffered knock back after knock back.

I did voluntary work with my local council and also spoke to the health and safety advisor where i worked to see if i could assist with risk assessments etc.

My advice never give in keep pushing, have you had your CV checked by someone as that is normally the first step to catching an employers eye.

Thanks for reply, I will just have to keep going till I'll get somewhere. I had CV checked, but thats only the start. I will keep pushing and with some luck maybe once something will go my way. Thanks Jacob

Hi Jacob

Are you currently in employment? If so then you could try asking your existing H&S people if you can do some shadowing, sit in on training sessions etc. All useful experience if you can get it and good to show initiative and enthusiasm to potential employees.

Good luck in your search, keep plugging away.
