i would have thought some means of measuring the weather should be available whether it is fixed to the crane or hand held. Even when operating MEWP outdoors you need some means of measuring the wind speed. They do give you guidance on how trees are moving etc. but a bit hit and miss. Of course the wind speed at ground level can be totally different at the jib head. How does your friend decide when it is to windy for him to work safely, Why doesn't he know the answer. I would want some way of measuring it myself if i was in his situation. Mobile cranes i have certainly seen fitted with wind speed monitors so would be surprised if it wasn't required on cranes. Hi, Just to add to the above BS7121(I think) the Code of Practice for Safe Use Of Cranes recommends that an anemometer is fitted on the crane at a suitable point to measure wind speed and also that a hand held anemometer is available where necessary. Regards Steve

BS7121 deals with the Safe Use of Cranes. Section 18.3 of BS7121 Part 1:2006 (General) deals with 'Wind speeds' and states "In the case of cranes positioned where they could be adversely affected by high winds an anemometer should be located/mounted at a suitable point(s), preferably on the crane structure and supplemented with hand held anemometer(s), where necessary". Section 8.8.4 of BS7121 Part 3:2000 (Mobile Cranes) deals with 'Means to check wind speeds' and states "The appointed person should obtain information on wind conditions prior to starting a lifting operation (e.g. by obtaining a local weather forecast or by using an anemometer)".
