Its in the Daily Mail so it must be right then - please tell me I've dreamt this? Soon foot bobbies/cycle bobbies/paper boys will be banned too. Is it time to give up the profession? because nothing we do will be taken seriously http://www.dailymail.co....health-safety-fears.html

Yes, like you said, it's in the Daily Mail so it must be true: read the article and the real reason seems to be efficiency. 'Troops pulled out of France for Health and Safety reasons' - DM Headline 6th June 1940. I'd say don't give up on H&S, just treat the press with the contempt it deserves, John

So much for promoting cycles and using our vehicles less to reduce carbon emissions... This just sounds ridiculous :(

Common Sense Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate. Teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing

As usual, the Daily Mail has been selective in its news based on a House of Lords question etc. If one believes the responses, most of the bicycle related postal delivery will be replaced by larger trolleys, and not vans ! I do not intend to get involved in a debate on the hazards and risks of cycling where there is no seperation of motorised vehicles and bicycles! The details are at:- http://www.theyworkforyo...s/?id=2010-03-29a.1186.6

Dream or nightmare, I am not so sure, but perhaps a healthy pinch of salt required? And because I am feeling a bit mischievous. I just love Lord B's suggestion that "Royal Mail bicycles were being ... converted to vans" I have 2 bikes; can someone come round and convert those to vans as well please? Better still to a VW camper van :-) Have just 'won' a lawn mower on e bay, I wonder if that will be delivered by bike?

It only mentions safety regarding the fact that they want larger loads. The bikes carry 32kg and if they wanted to load more it would become unsafe. It hasn't succomb to H&S in the way the article tries to make out, it is because it will not become safe to carry greater loads. It says it will be unsafe on british roads, if you cycle it is unsafe withour having 32kg+ on your bike it is also unsafe on the pavements. There appears to be more cyclists using pavements than roads, this includes the police, paper boys etc. For once I agree, but is is all to do with closer of sorting offices this means that the postman would have further to cycle with the greater load. If it was a manual handling task i.e. in work your boss asked you not to break things into smaller parcels but to double the load from 15kg to 30kg, what would you advise that it's ok to do because if you say it's not then 'H&S' has gone mad and we've lost all common sense on such matters? I have always said it is not down to H&S but down to solicitors who interupt tand twist the regulations for finaicial gain.
