Hi all Please could I have some feedback. I have been asked by a colleague whether a risk assessment should be produced for carers who restain children. If so what needs to go in it? The care home in question have lots of H&S documents which protect the child. There are various risk assessments and a policy and training records are also kept. The carers are recieving injuries and leaving the company and then claiming due to the injury their receiving. The carers are sent on courses to protect themselves and the child theyre restraining, is there any more that can be done? Thanks in advance. Emsie :)

Emsie, we use CALM (Crisis, Aggression, Limitation and Management) techniques for restraint in our childrens care home and have no issues with injury resulting from these techniques. CALM Training Services can be found on the internet and have other services that may be able to help you in this area.

Fordy What documentation do you have? Do you have separate risk assessments for staff to adhere too? Emsie

Hi Emsie I would say absolutely they must provide risk assesments to protect both child and staff member. There should be assesments on the type of restraint used and the appropriateness for that individual also if the restraint is going to be undertaken by a member of the same sex, bringing into the mix single gender care, this is before any restraint is undertaken and only as a last resort restraint should be used. Also the effectiveness of the training provided. looking at every staff member following the same guidelines and setting boundries and limits and carrying through with consequence, as set out within the individual childs support plan. are staff working together as a team or do they make it up as they go along,or even falling into previous training, that had a differant approach also maybe looking at more frequent supervision within a group setting and discussing what was done well what could of been done better and what we as a team will do in the future scenario, also at the end of an incident completing a COPING model on both the staff member and child. Hope this helps sorry rambled on a bit but defo needs to be done
