We use a variety of monitoring systems for our lone workers from log in to office to use of external monitoring company. However a question has been raised re the use of family memebers as "buddies" gfor lone workers. Eg if lone worker does not return home the "buddy" raises the alarm. Is this acceptable in some cases?

Hi, In my experience the use of family members to raise the alarm if the lone worker does not return home is just one of a number of possible controls and I would consider it to be perfectly acceptable. Really its down to your risk assessment which should indicate whether the work can be done safely by a lone worker and what arrangements are necessary to ensure the lone worker is at no more risk than other employees. The following links might help especially the Suzy Lamplugh ones: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg73.pdf http://www.suzylamplugh.org/personal-safety/ http://www.suzylamplugh....a_lone_worker_system.pdf Regards Steve

I would have thought it is not an ideal control and therefore if used it should be the last in the hierarchy aside from PPE. Whilst it may be a legitimate response for someone not returning home I would hope that better controls could be utilised.
