Hi

I've a project with includes the construction at flat roof level of a single storey timber framed hotel.

Also on the roof is a Mobile Phone mast with microwave dishes etc..

O2 have not provided any information regarding the risks of health to those working in close proximity to these masts, although on site an engineer told the guys not to stand closer to them for longer than five minutes.

Does any one have any experience of could any one offer me any advice on this please?

Thank you.

Paul, you really need to get this information from whoever owns the thing.

Paul,
You will need to liaise with O2 and find out if you can have a shut down. How long will your work take as this will depend on when O2 will allow the shut down. They will look at the best time for the shut down and liaise with you. You should access the site with a NARD alert that give you details of the dosage of non ionising radiation. You will need to have the site shut down to allow for works to be carried out safely though. One of the big problems with some of these sites is the paging antenna as they are powerful and can cause more harm if working near them for prolonged periods.
Microwave dishes are safe as long as you are not working in front of them.
Telecomms antenna have an arc of 60 degress 30 degress from centre, you should not stand in this arc and be at least 2 meters away. The maximum time near an antenna is 6 mins but I would not stand there for this long.
see link for non ionising radiation, you will be able to find out about exposure etc. http://www.icnirp.de/activities.htm
another web site you can look at is http://www.hpa.org.uk/radiation

Paul

I had a similar situation a number of years ago with a base station operator, Vodafone

I found them extremely helpful, although they were very reluctant to close down the base station for any length of time.

What they did do was to visit the site, with specialist field strength instruments, and set a safe working area which enabled work to commence. They also fully briefed the contactors who were carrying out the work as to the risks.

We then agreed a shutdown period which allowed the work to be finished.

If my memory serves me correctly this was in what they considered to be one of the quieter periods which ran from about 1000 hours to 1500 hours.

The base station engineers were in attendance at these times to confirm the transmission equipment had been closed down before work commenced and to confirm when it had been re activated.
