Quick question- should the supplier of wood chippings for use in biomass boiler be providing a safet data sheet for reference? Thanks

I doubt whether it would be possible to produce a safety data sheet, or at least one that would be of any real benefit. What would the hazardous constituents be? These could vary significantly depending on, for example, the type of wood from which the product is produced. What if the product contained a varying mixture of different woods? Would the constituents of the wood have risk phrases? Would the producer even know what the constituent of the different raw materials were?
Would you expect a data sheet for the original wood (i.e. as tree trunks presumably)? So why would one expect a safety data sheet for chips off the trunk?

Are wood chippings classifiable under CHIP? If not then no MSDS is required although you might get some safety information supplied under HASAWA s6 (but don't count on it).

How does one determine if PPE is required given that operatives can be exposed to dust when unblocking jams and removing ash. I ask as our client is expecting our staff to do this but has not provided any information to us.

If there is wood dust causing a problem it would be only sensible to provide a suitable dust mask for comfort if nothing else. The ash produced, I suggest, would be unlikely to be the wood itself but non-combustible residues and it is unlikely that the supplier will be able to tell you what this consists of. Therefore as a minimum treat it as nuisance dust and provide a suitable mask but if you are worried have a sample of the dust analysed to determine the levels of likely materials (heavy metals for example).
