Hi, am about to leave the Royal Engineers after a 14 year career and am looking for a new and fulfilling career path. I am interested in possibly starting a career within the H&S industry but do not have much knowledge or information on the direction or courses i would require. Could anyone please be able to reply with the training i would as well as future job prospects, pay, career advice if i was to gain qualifications in this trade. I would ideally like to attend a 'fast track' course of some sort with prospects of applying for a job following the course. Many thanks. Kev

There are loads of us ex-forces in Safety, especially sappers for some reason. I am ex artillery and have been in safety for a couple of years. It is a fulfilling career and your forces background will stand you in good stead. I would start with NEBOSH construction cert (or general cert if you are not looking at the construction industry). Get that done and hit the agencies for a job. Search online for Health and Safety recruitment and you will find plenty. Obviously at the minute things aren't as easy as they might have been a couple of years ago, but there is work out there. Best of luck.

Hi Kev I was in the same position a few years ago, my best advice is to go for one of the NEBOSH courses either the General or Construction Cert, put your CV out there on the online agencies, I believe there are some around at the moment that specialise in ex forces personnel,. You will find that there are loads of ex Sappers into safety, and many who will help you. Once established, improve your position by doing either the NEBOSH Diploma or the NVQ Level 4. Good luck REgards Rob

Good afternoon Kev As a former Sapper myself, my first piece of advice would be as others have mentioned - do a NEBOSH Certificate level course. There are others that may be easier to achieve but, speaking from an employers point of view, NEBOSH is probably the most well known and respected academic qualification. It will also allow you to move more easily into the higher level NEBOSH Diploma qualifications as you will be given a grounding in 'NEBOSH Speak' (those who have done it will know what I mean! I personally did mine as part of a Management Diploma taken during my pre-release period. My second piece of advice is never to sell your skills learnt in the military short. There a many skills that transfer readily over to civvy street such as a good work ethic (getting the job done despite putting in a few extra hours now and again) and a sense of humour. Thirdly, move into health and safety for the right reasons. You will get a lot of stick from some people for the work that you do, you may be ridiculed and some people are downright rude. If you believe that you are in a position to prevent real pain and suffering and that you can make a difference to people's lives then go for it. Hope you get to enjoy the sun this weekend (safely obviously!!!) Gary
