I have been asked by one of our contracts managers if there is a danger form working in an area close to a Mobile Phone Mast sited on a roof of a building. A team would be carrying out work on the roof over a 10 week period.
I have looked on the internet where I found that the mobile phone operators have publicly stated that the levels of radiofrequency radiation from their transmission masts will comply with the public exposure guidelines published by the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection.
On the other hand residents who lived near a transmission mast had headaches that cleared when the mast was removed. So I am a bit confused, is there a danger yes or no?

Have a look at the mobile phone base satations guidance on the HPA website, link below, the info may be of use. Much depends on the type of mast in question. I suggest you ask the organisation who owns the mast about safe working distances and practices etc.

There was a similar thread not too long ago that may also be of some help:

If you are working very close to the aerials and associated microwave dishes there is the potential for exposure.

There should be a notice posted near the equipment stating safe working distances, if your workers able to approach them as they are roof mounted

As has been said in previous posts you should contact the base station operator.

So far as alleged effects on members of the pubic are concerned you should have a look at the work which has been carried out by Professor Elaine Fox at the University of Essex.

Thanks to you all for the feed back. I have talked to the contracts managers involved. I will be contacting the organisation who owns the masts to discuss what control measures we will need to put in place.

Once again thanks.
