I am currently working offshore with non English speaking crew and having difficulties in raising awareness of hazards.
I am considering producing an A4 sheet sized aide memoir for the use of a cable reel/winch deployment and recovery system.
This would have pictograms of hazards at the top, work instruction/check list in the body, and PPE requirements at the foot.
Any guidance, advice or experience of such an idea would be most appreciated.
Kind regards
Reg

Good morning Reg,
I too work off shore and with a number of Filipino along with Indonesian, and Eastern European crews. I spend a great deal of time trying to explain the potential hazards in the work, however a lot of the time they smile and say they understand then go off and do just what they want with little regard for safety. I have found that instructional videos ( a lot of these can be found on youtube) a lot of them seen to understand but my constant presence when undertaking a different from the normal routine is really making them think when the “Stop the Job” system is in place.

Your thinking summarised in: 'This would have pictograms of hazards at the top, work instruction/check list in the body, and PPE requirements at the foot' is sound.
A company called Ergoweb, www.ergoweb.com, publish drawings on a CD which I've used to produce what you refer to for some kinds of hazards, although safe posture may be just as important as a safety control as PPE (normally the last resort).
Problems of copyright prevent me simply letting you have copies of the material I've developed; because it's cost me quite a bit over the years, naturally I have to charge for it. If you'd like to have a brief chat about how I developed the material, you can call me on 44 208 654 0808.
There's a well-stocked, well-indexed photo library at www.istockphoto.com if you want to develop your own materials.
Other companies in your situation normally commission graphic designers and animators for what you're looking for.

Thank you for replying.
I think Savery has the same thoughts as me, in that being on the job site has to be a number one priority in the situation that we find ourselves in.
There is procedures in place, along with check lists and work instructions but the chances of them being read is very unlikely. That is why I am pursuing the idea of prompt/flash cards.
I do not want to go to great expense at the moment as I am only just pursuing the feasibility of the idea.
Regards to all
