Hi All
Other than talking to the manufacturer how often should warehouse racking be formally inspected?
Taking into account the load bearing structure possible metal fatigue etc
many thanks

Racking is unlikely to fail by fatigue loading. Fatigue failure requires a load to be applied many times (often thousands) before fatigue failure is likely.
The mode of failure is more likely to be over load causing structural failure (buckling of structural members) or failure of pin joints etc by shear or bending stresses.
Impact by fork trucks etc, leaving dents/impact increases the risk of buckling (coke can effect).
Missing pins/locking devices is also a likely way to cause failure.
There is a trade body releated to warehouse racking - sorry can't remember the name. Also it is likely there will be a British Standard to work to for your particular type of racking.
I would guess something like monthly visual inspections by locally trained staff and an annual formal inspection by a suitably competent engineer will be a good starting point.

The default is thorough exam annually, but you need to do your own inspections for damage like FLT impact much more frequently. There's good guidance in HSE's HSG76 "Warehousing and Storage" at para 641 onwards. You can download it free from HSE website. It was recently updated with input from Retail and Distribution Group members.
The Trade Association is SEMA, the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association - they have inspection protocols for their members etc. and if the supplier of your racking is a member, they should have given you a lot of useful info (worth a call to them).
Impact damage is your main worry, along with overloading/uneven loading.

We designed a range of racking tagging and inspection systems last year with great results. Feel free to drop me a line if you want any info sent over.

Good practise is a daily walk round check to look for any areas of new impact damage. A montly inspection by a qualified racking inspector (this can be one of your employees who as competed a one day training course see SEMA for details).
And an annual thorough inspection by a qualified racking engineer. Most racking installation companies will undertake this for you.

As part of good practice we check our racking monthly, completed by on site racking inspectors trained by SESS. An annual inspection is completed by an independent body (SESS)
