Presently I am trying to compile a job description for a fire safety officer to work in a University. Does anybody have an idea or can provide information?

Is this to be a full-time position or will the duties be an addition to an existing job? The answer is important as the extent and expectations on the individual(s) would be quite different.

The first starting point should be the existing fire risk assessment(s) which should specify the management and engineering controls needed to provide effective fire safety, from which the content of the job can be drafted out.

I would expect the job to include (not in priority order) education and training of staff, provision of information to students and other site users, inspections, audits, tests of equipment (door closers, alarms, sprinklers etc), overseeing drills, oversight (not issue) of Hot Work Permit systems, liaison with enforcement agencies, liasion with the local Fire & Rescue Service, ensuring the Uni fire policies and procedures are enforced and so on.

If the job has any management responsibility then these can be added as appropriate.

Hope this helps.

PS the use of that particular avatar is likley to discourage some posters and encourage mis-information from others. The colour is OK but 35 miles too far West!
