I am looking for some practical advice on some extraction solutions. We are undertaking a new process which involves shot-blasting and grinding. The two operations (blasting and welding) are undertaken at two separate areas within the same large Workshop, so segregation is difficult. In addition to this, the sections of pipe being worked on are rolled on support trestles from one stage to the next. We also have an overhead crane in operation, so hanging anything from the ceiling isn’t really an option.
There is a large quantity of grit and dust generated as a consequence. At present, the guys undertaking the operation are wearing air-fed hoods, however there is still the problem of other personnel within the area, as well as the mess that is left behind.
I would welcome some advice from anyone who has similar work processes going on, or with experience in developing practical LEV solutions.

You can get benches that extract, the top of the bench (work area) is a metal grid - the air / fumes / dust are drawn down through this grid.

Difficult to comment in detail, but Muiryden's response is a good one. I have had considerable success using the downdraft system that is described. Not only does it not depend upon the operator placing the hood of an adjustable system correctly, but it also is working with gravity as opposed to against.
HSE has some very good guidance on LEV systems on their website.
