Horizon Drilling Rig Fire - the Gulf of Mexico

I hope we all follow up with Horizon Drilling Rig Fire incident in the Gulf of Mexico . This is very important issue that need to be monitored and share within our workplace. I have shared this with my colleagues at meetings, what amazed me is the evacuation of personnel and survival record reported. 135 men on board, 124 were lifted to safety 11 men missing. This is an improvement as against survival on the Piper Alpha fire incident. An evidence to say that regular emergency evacuation response drill is been practice on the rig. Hence, we all need to reinforce emergency evacuation drill exercise in our work place. For more update on this incident visit: http://www.time.com/time...tter-daily#ixzz0nbr4Z2T6

I wonder what the effect will be on the oil & gas industry as a whole especially with the exponential growth of the renewable energy sector. Will this give renewables an extra boost with the intention of replacing oil & gas? We cannotcontiue to burn foffil fuels for energy when all our plastic is made from them. Imagine a world without plastic. It would be a world that would change our lives completeley and certainly reduce our lifestyles.

I watched Jamie Oliver in France last night and he made a point that in the market square there were no plastic bags at all. Everyone had their own trolley or proper shopping bags.
What's wrong with that?

Kamildeen. Thanks for those evac numbers. I was in the industry at the time of Piper Alpha and even after all these years the hairs on the back on my neck are tingling as I type this.
As to the future; exploration has always been at the forefront of technology and thus when things go wrong they tend to be big, big big. I have no clear idea yet as to exactly what happened or why so it wouldn't be appropriate to comment on the detail. What I do know is that you have to take risks to progress, stop doing that and you stagnate. Drilling in the Gulf of Mexico has risks.

Chris,
Just look on Youtube for Tim Minchin's 'Canvass Bags' - it's comedy (and he is very very funny), but I guarantee that once having heard the song you will never ever forget your canvass bags again,
John
