Hi, I previously made a thread regarding implementing 18001 to gain more work with LA's. It became evident that it would not be that beneficial. Would any one be kind enough to suggest possible ways or maybe even a few tips in winning new council contacts? The work we specialise is fencing and landscaping, with a good level of health and safety. Thanks for taking the time in reading this

Safezone As others have previously stated normally most Local Authority Work is available via the tender process that contractors must participate inorder to get the work whether you are a small contractor or a multi million pound turnover contractor. Another point to consider is that most of the larger social housing contractors in the UK tend to win the majourity of the work ( most of the time ). They then have the personel to deliver the contracted service or subcontract the work out to often local contractors. It could be worthwhile observing the local press / trade journals to see what contractor has won work from local authorities in your area, and then ask to speak to the estimating / business development depts to see what their system is when it comes to tendering for work for local contractors. Perhaps the local authority might have a business day arranged to allow small local contractors to make a formal expression of interest to the main contractor. Often there will be stipulation in the contract terms and conditions inwhich local contractors will be used inorder to stimulate the local economy / employment. This is a process that is happening with my local authority inwhich the main contractor is building a large prison, and the local authority has set up a business day for local contractors to inquire about potential work from the main contractor. You will probably find however you will need to have CHAS / ConstructionLine accreditation / achilles certificates though, although I don't think ISO 18001 Standard might be enough to get you through this process, perhaps it is not construction specific. Good Luck John.
