Terry Have you or your company not under taken the role of CDM Coordinator before? Read the CDM Regulations, they give you all information you require to complete the PCI

I know there has to be a first time for everything but is this a competence issue? If you need to look at someone else's pre construction template that suggests you are a little short?

There are a few options to select : a) Either appoint a competent CDM - Co-Ordinator ( external consultant - and there will be many due to the downturn in Construction right now ) and get a cost comparison. b) Liaise with other colleagues who are involved in the demolition and construction of a new sheltered housing unit, in collating the pre-construction information. Possibly you may have to do a CDM Co-Ordinator Course and be registered with the APS. If you get sufficient assistance from your colleagues you could use as good experience if you want to continue your career as a CDM Co-Ordinator. Other immediate Issues to consider : a) Time in appointing a competent CDM Co-ordinator to the demolition phase of the contract if you go down this route b) Competency of the various parties involved in the contract You'ill find what basic information should be in the pre-construction plan from CDM 2007 but you will need assistance in putting the document together. Terry, Worrying as commented upon before. You say 'I have been recently appointed' do you mean your company? - Could make a huge difference to you! Regards Simon

Hi Terry Do you have comprehensive information as to any asbestos in the existing building? There's an unpublished HSE report that identifies that demolition by explosives, all else being equal is twice as safe as other methods (less at risk for less time). Demolition by machine next best option. You can download the CDM ACOP from http://books.hse.gov.uk/hse/public/home.jsf, + lots of additional guidance at the constructionskills website. P

Yes, I've a PCI for such a job, however the design & condition of the old and the new structures will be entirely different to yours, as will the site, local environment and overlapping issues. And I'm not sending it! The only thing worth checking your PCI against is (a) the client's brief; (b) the existing H&S File; (c) the Design & the Designer's brief; (d) local overlap, site and environment issues and (e) Appendix 2 of the CDM ACoP. Your job is to make sure that comprehensible information is available to those who need it at the right time, and to identify where that info. is missing, advising your Client where additional surveys etc. need to be commissioned.

Terry, Some very good points made and advice given. It would be good to have a response from you to help alay some of our fears! How well is the rest of the statutory process being addressed (aside from the PCI)? Regards Simon
