I think you are going to have to be a bit more specific. what kind of work are you undertaking and how near's near installing fencing to separate the work area from the reservoir but if you are operating heavy equipment then this will do little. at the end of the day people walk along cliff edges reservoirs and canals day in day out so it will come down to what work you are carrying out and the risk of some one falling in. Mike Agree you need to consider variables including how near's near, how steep the sides of the reservoir are, the nature of the work, avoiding polluting the reservoir etc. Whilst obvious aimed at managing risks to the public rather than those carrying out a work activity, there are a number of examples as to precautions (including as regards rescue) being taken (or not) to stop people drowning in watercourses at http://www.vscg.co.uk/ http://publications.envi...pdf/SCHO0809BQVS-e-e.pdf Regards, Peter

Ah! Life's little ironies. Farrell refers to guidance produced by the Envirornment Agency. The link I gave refers to a prosecution of............the Environment Agency.

I deliver water awareness training to Large Organisations Nationwide; the point being that best practice for defining "near water" is 3m free access (No fall protection). The staff training on water may appear obvious, however there are alot of dangers associated working In / Near Water. Contact me for further info. Good Luck
