Hi All, My firm is looking to bring in the mandatory wearing of safety glasses within our workshops, we have carried out a risk assessment and found it necessary, obviously some are not happy. Personally I have not seen a workshop that hasn't got a mandatory policy for quite a while. How many of your firms out there have this policy? Steve

"some are not happy". Unhappy about what? Mandatory Policy is often the only option left to the employer when discipline and culture is poor at 'point of hazard'. This is not so much a matter of 'Risk Assessment', more a matter of fact. Do beware of interference with hearing protection though (if applicable) and do ensure that your employees are involved in the evaluation and selection of the PPE. "Eyes: Issue quantity= 2. Replacements are not available"

Ron has some good points, however for the sake of discussion I will provide an alternative view. Manadatory safety glasses should apply where the operative is likely to get a projectile in their eyes, as opposed to a blanket rule for all and sundry. In the construction industry the mandatory wearing of safety glasses is normally applied to the whole site and regardless of the task. The argument being that you could get something in your eyes at anytime. True, but is it really necessary? I agree with mandatory wearing of hard hats but I don't believe glasses should be treated just the same. If the trend continues then we are going to be wearing suits of armour before long!

We operate mandatory safety shoe and glasses areas within the business. We are now over the hurdle of prescription safety specs with the use of Spec Savers vouchers which work really well for me; I just hand over a voucher and the employee does the rest. No gripes about frame design to date. Having run this for about three months now it is well established with staff picking up each other when specs or shoes are not being worn. They even challenge senior management which is reassuring. Further to this I came back unannounced on site one evening to find the whole late shift fully kitted out :) There is a tiny risk of projectiles but the main hazard to justify specs is chemical splashes.
