Can anyone one help, I have just set up procedures for working with and removing non-licensable asbestos containing materials. Employees are due to attend the relevant asbestos essentials training course next week, we have a procedures in place to dispose of the asbestos waste, but I’m getting conflicting messages with regards to the emptying and cleaning of a H Type vac. I am thinking about having a permanent enclosure build next to the secured asbestos waste skip in our compound. This should then allow for the employee to clean out the vacuum safely. I would appreciate any further advice

We get a specialst company to clean, empty and service the vac when full.

Emptying must be done by a LICENSED contractor. You should look to set up a contract for this, ideally get them to do the PAT testing and all servicing/maintenance for you.

Have a look at BS8520, which replaces PAS60 http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/pas60.htmPart 3 "gives recommendations for the operation, cleaning and maintenance of class H (High hazard) vacuum cleaners containing a filter conforming to BS EH1822 in the controlled removal of ACMs." HTH
