Hi All I have heard it said that normal HNC/ HND electrical qualifications and years of experience isn't enough to prove competancy, when working with electrics during work tasks. These being wiring plugs etc . An X HSE officer is advising that electrical competancy training is required. Is this really necessary to prove competancy in these cirnumstance. These people aren't working as electrical fitters or installers but do have rise to wire plugs and circuits up.

I would think that some evidence of staying up to date with the latest regs would be essential. One could have a 30 year old HNC/D and have worked to those standards ever since - but times and regs change!

This comment might be for a different reason. Is wiring a plug (and other practical tasks) actually on the syllabus for HNC or HND? Was the practical experience mentioned relevant to these types of tasks, and had anyone checked that they were being done correctly? If not, then he has a point. I once came across a case of a person with a good degree in electrical engineering who wired up a three pin plug so that the live wire was connected to the earth of the equipment. When questioned, he had not realised that the colour code was important. !!!!! He had had no relevant practical experience. He only had theoretical knowledge at that stage in his career. He was lethal.
