Hi, I'd be looking to ensure that they have a health & safety management system and environmental management system in place that suits their organisation. I'd ask them to show me their certificates of Category 1 Asbestos training, accredited by the United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association or the Independent Asbestos Training Providers Association - ensuring of course these are in-date. I'd ask for evidence of CSCS cards which state applicable trades such as 'Asbestos Removal Operative' for example. I'd ask for references for previous projects where they've done such work before. I'd ask for examples of risk assessments and method statements of work they've done before, showing the details of any enclosures they've set up and travel routes to skips, decontamination units, and the location of their negative pressure units. Ask for evidence of their HSE licence to carry out licensed asbestos removal (the nature of their work will depend on whether or not they will have this). Equally so, be aware that work with some asbestos containing materials (Asbestos Insulation Board, for example) requires a licence. Some contractors will hold Category 2 training which is for unlicenced asbestos work. The other questions you'll need to ask will be similar to any other contractor assessment - i.e. provision of safe equipment, maintenance of said equipment, provision of correct PPE, and qualifications of key personnel.
