Hi everyone.
I've been asked to sit in on the interview panel for a couple of new people we wish to employ at a university, and have been asked to ask 3 or 4 safety questions related to their trades.
As i've never been invovled with builders or joiners, is there any one out there, that could advise on some simple questions.
Oh, by the way the interviews start tomorrow at 09:00hrs.
Talk about last minute!!!!!!!

I always like to ask people "What do you think causes accidents?"
You could ask them that in relation to their trade!

I would ask what they consider to be the most serious risk to their health and safety in their particular trade/business.

You should get something about woodworking machinery fro a joiner perhaps and (hopefully) work at height fro a builder.

Sorry, these go back a few years, but we give them a situation and get them to do all the talking and explaination of hazard and control. If they've got CSCS cards they should know a little.

Health & Safety Questions

1 You are asked to replace a combination frame to the balcony of a top floor flat. The work will include glazing and painting. What precautions will you take to ensure the safety of the tenant and her young children whilst the work is being carried out?

2 Whilst working at a property you come across a panel that will have to be disturbed. You do not know what the panel is made of but your experience tells you that it may be asbestos of some kind. What would you do?

3 You are issued with an assortment of H&S equipment, hard hat, goggles etc. In what circumstances would you use this equipment?

Alan,

Thinking this as I type so not really thought out properly but these might give you a starting point.

1
You could ask where they served their apprenticeship and are they indentured?
This may give an insight into their work ethos/background if their tutoring companies had received any HSE notices/prosecutions.
2
Ask what accidents they have been involved in either personally or as witnesses and what did they learn from those accidents.
3
You could ask the joiner what a "push stick" is because you have heard the phrase but have no idea what it is or where it is used. You should get an answer relating it to circular saws and pushing timber near the blade so it keeps hands and arms remote from the blade.
4 Ask what precautions the builder would take when mixing cement. Masks, gloves, possibly eye protection, as well as clothing, shielding dust from others/segregation etc.

You could look on the HSE website and pick up some questions from their leaflets

Hope this gives you a starting idea
