In yesterday’s London Evening Standard was a gem of a piece on the importance of health and safety – thank you to Richard Godwin for his supportive and very true words. Use the link below and scroll down the page to Health and Safety is there to save lives http://www.thisislondon....-back-home-in-britain.do

Good to see something positive published for a change but sadly I think it misses the reason why H&S has such a bad press. Of course everyone believes that H&S should be in existence to save lives (even Lord Young says that). What has caused bad press is poor H&S 'professionals' implementing ridiculous levels of safety management or restricting activities in the name of H&S to avoid liability. I think many people can see past the 'elf n safety' to the good work that has been done but sadly the industry is tainted by those that want to eliminate risk and in the process stifle economic business and prevent kids and adults experiencing all that life has to offer. I'm still waiting for a balanced article in the press that says - yep H&S is inherently good but it has lost it's way and there are some bad professionals out there, but they aren't all bad. That would be 'true' reporting for me.

It's nice to see some positive acticles on H&S. Many people don't realise just how things are, particularly in high risk industries. Some pander or believe the media hype. Many poor decisions are made by caring individuals who are not H&S professionals and don't always understand the implications of their actions and decisions. Roll on the new Government on defining H&S competency once and for all!
