One of our operatives has asked the quetion about the SWL of safety harnesess to be worn by individuals. I have managed to pick up an unoffical document stating that:
A typical SWL of 125Kg (17st, 7lbs) for a standard harness and A typical SWL of 135Kg (19st, 4lbs) for a XL harness. Any weight above this then a specially made harness must only be worn.
Does anyone know if these figures are correct and if so what standard or guidence it comes from?
Thanks, John

The manufacturer should provide you with this information as it will vary dependent on make and model. You may find the SWL marked on the harness label. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer for advice. If you need any info on pre-use inspection systems for your harnesses (or other work at height equipment) drop me a line and I will forward you a link to provide an effective solution.

Having worked in the working at height industry (design, manufacture, install and maintenance of access equipment/building maintenance cradles) I had a double check with the supplier I used to deal with. Their figures are slightly different and are shown within the user manual for the harness.
They advised that all manufacturers should be able to provide this information either as part of the manual, factory test/inspection certificate or other certification provided on supply of the harness.

John, There are various EN standards which the work at height equipment has to comply to and there is what they call a standard sized european man/woman which includes weight etc. For good comprehensive and easy to read information look on the wahsa - Work at Height Safety Association web site http://www.wahsa.org.uk/ they have some excellent technical guidance docs. Hope this helps. Solo!
