Anyone have any idea about how I'd go about achieving these standards? Its only a small business so I don't want to pay for the standards?

...set your own system up using HSG65 Health and Safety Management Model... if your only a small company it should be fairly straight forward ...there is a presentation on the hse.gov website you can down load that as well

You will certainly need the standard - £90 from TSO. The HSG65 H&S will only help you insofar as most management systems have a similar structure, but of course ISO 9001 is a quality management standard.
You need to develop a quality manual that broadly follows the requirements of the standard, and that describes what you do. Unless you are a very small company, don't try and put precise operating procedures into this, but do include steps that you take to assure the quality that your customers require. If you are used to doing H&S risk assessments this should be easy for you, as the process is similar.
Make sure that in the manual, as well as a description of what you do, you have a Quality Policy, a process diagram and an organisational chart. An auditor should be able to understand your business from the manual, so try and think like an auditor!
Good Luck
