Can someone just confirm if what I am thinking is correct as I am a little shaky with this subject - under LOLER any lifting operation not using cranes or forklifts but using lifting beams (eg with chain block and tackle etc) the person planning and supervising the lift should be trained. I am asking this as we have 3 persons trained in lifting and slinging on site yet I have just been made aware that other persons use this equipment for maintenance puposes and my immediate reaction is this is not acceptable. Can someone please confirm what they think. Thanx

There are various rigging and slinging courses available and the maintainance crew should be trained in this. How will they know what weights can be lifted, the correct position for the chain, the type of bite they use etc. Leaving yourselves wide open otherwise i'd say.

Organisation of lifting operations (1) Every employer shall ensure that every lifting operation involving lifting equipment is - (a) properly planned by a competent person; (b) appropriately supervised; and (c) carried out in a safe manner. (2) In this regulation "lifting operation" means an operation concerned with the lifting or lowering of a load. 32 LOLER 98 Guidance 7 Guidance 7 Regulation 8(1)(a)* 210 The person planning the operation should have adequate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience of planning lifting operations. Low straight from LOLER, as Frank says you are leaving yourself open if the person in charge does not conform to the above passage. Ta Alex PS hope this does not breach any copyrights as LOLER ACOP is free to download from the HSE site.
