This is going to make me sound daft no doubt but is there a height at which you have to secure shelving (to wall, floor...)?
So storage for realms of paper 2 meters high (the shelves not the reams!)?
Is there a standard?

Hi Claire,
As I understand it the decision to bolt down or not depends more on how the shelving is loaded. Is paper loaded on to the shelving manually or mechanically?

This is just an internal store room for a print room where all the paper etc will be stored (it's not in place yet). No mechanical aids used etc.
I wouldn't have said that it needed securing but I'm more used to more industrial premises and so I thought I'd ask.

Standards exist for document/archive storage and pallet storage.
These standards refer to a height to depth ratio (provided staying within limits and always making use of the lower shelves)
A Height to Depth Ration of 5:1 is considered to be stable
>6:1 requires anchorage (floor)
> 8:1 overhead ties.

We have hand loaded shelving to 3 mtrs in our warehouses and that's not bolted down. As the installation is designed and fitted by company that's a member of SEMA I would expect that it is within their guidelines (in fact I know it is because I asked the same question a couple of years ago for the same reasons)

Morning Clairel,
Seems like you have two options, bolt it down or modify shelving depth to bring into 5:1 ratio.
Thanks to all correspondants as I have learned something new early in the day so the day is off to a good start.
Take Care All
