After just reading another myopic article from the Daily Mail website on elf n safety putting a stop to posties on bikes, I also came across the following article from the Malaysian National News Agency. "Accidents at work places have resulted in 5,116 deaths from 2006 to 2009 says the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). DOSH director-general Datuk Dr Johari Basri said 1,303 deaths were caused by accidents at work place in 2006, 1,337 deaths in 2007, 1,176 in 2008 and another 1,300 in 2009." When you consider that the population of Malaysia is half that of the UK, maybe we are doing something right in the UK after all. Bet the Mail won't print that story. Nice one Gordon, thanks for that. I came across something similar when I was in New Zealand, though it was nearly ten years ago so things have probably improved. I heard something on the radio saying they had had about 120 workplace deaths the previous year, and since their population at the time was about 1 twentieth of ours that made their fatality rate about 10 times worse. Their employment minister basically put it down to the rugged manliness of Kiwi workers; from seeing e.g. their roadworks I put it down to an appalling lack of concern for workers' lives, John

Puts it all in focus doesn't it? I cannot resist mentioning that having a safety agency called "DOSH" is perhaps unfortunate when viewed from a UK perspective:) p48
