Does anyone have any suggestions for effective driver training? I have to renew our driver training programme for employees who drive on company business within the UK (mainly hire cars no HGVs/ freight). We are using an online training course at the moment but it is not very popular. I was just wondering if there were any better options.

I guess it might well come down to cost and numbers. But there are a lot of schemes or companies that provide driver improvement courses where they take employees out in cars and identify weaknesses and how to improve their driving. i do have a contact i can provide who operates a national driver improvement programme across the UK. Not sure of cost but PM me and i can let you have his details. Phil

Determining whether the training is effective or not is a difficult one but you might want to contact your local county council raod safety team who may have a road safety and driver training team or at least recommend some training. As always, there are planty of trainers and trianing out there but sorting the wheat from the chaff can be difficult.

Some companies require their drivers to undertake on the road driving assessments which are assessed by professional assessors and have a scored rating as the outcome with areas for improvement identified and also where good driving was demonstrated. In our company it is mandatory for all company car users, but also offer it free to all others on a voluntary basis. It costs approximatelt £150 per assessment of about 3 hours. There are several road safety organisations and individual outfits that offer such assessments.

Have done the IAM 'Advanced' driving test and can thoroughly recommend it. I know of one small company that couldn't afford a fleet training programme (there are some execllent ones but they do cost) and instead subsidised thier drivers to go through either the IAM 'Advanced' or RoSPA ROADA: http://www.rospa.com/drivertraining/default.aspx

We used www.beyonddriving.co.uk to carry out SAFED van training on our drivers a couple of years ago and can recommend them, looking to use them again shortly for some pot incident & refresher training after a recent accident. They do have rates per person/per van but are flexible if you are looking to keep cost and down time to a minimum.
