I've been asked about a safe method for lifting fairly substantial manhole (is that still an acceptible term) which have damaged or decayed lifting points for typical keys. It has been quoted that staff use flat bars and screwdrivers and then try and get a hand underneath in order to lift which is just a few crushed fingers waiting to happen.
rather than re-invent the wheel, would anyone out there in the safety community either have a safe system of work which may be applicable or recomendations regarding equipment to assist with the lift.
Thanks in advance.

Max,
If you do a web engine search you will see there are various tools that can be hired to assist in removing covers without use of screwdrivers...fingers etc

I like the idea of the magnetic one that way you aren't relying on the normal attachment points but I'm sure you could make something cheaper yourself just need to track down a big magnet.

This is a lifting job that IMHO is often underestimated. I have first hand experience of a case where a chap lifting one of these, as he had done any number of times before sufferred a significant injury that subsequently led to an ill health retirement. It had quite a profound effect on this individual. I do suggest looking at a some form of lever based tool that has been suggested. Good luck.

In a previous life I worked on motorway maintenance, we used a hydraulic lifter that was obtained very cheaply from our local plant hire shop.
