Hi All
Am reviewing SWPs and WIs for a chemical plant and they 've got loads for the different processes. In some cases, more than two WIs for the same operation. My plan was to observe each of the processes and use this knowledge in the review. But, my manager (also the plant manager) wants me to ask the technicians to perform the process and then assess them against a checklist created from the WI, so that this assessment can also form part of the employee's training record. My concern is that I believe this method is too intrusive and I am aware that some people dont test well if they know they are being assessed. Also, being new in the company (second week) am not comfortable with this approach.
So, I am looking for suggestions on how can carry out the review. All comment are welcome...

I'd start by asking the operators if the wi actually reflects what they do, especially if there really are 2 per task. A human factors analysis in essence. If you want more information pm me and I'll let you have a tool we've used to good effect.

allways get the day to day staff involved as its they who know what really happens on a day to day basis irrespective of what the assessment etc is and yes it is not unreasonable to test people provided the tests are fair and reasonable whilst being transparent to all - but you can only undertake 'tests' if all the parameters are suitable and sufficient
your comment "and they 've got loads for the different processes" worries me somewhat so evaluate your own position as there is no damage done if a person openly admits where their competence sits before a task is undertaken

Ade I carry out a similar process to the one you are proposing, we call this a JCC (Job Cycle Check). We take the current working Standard Practice and measure it against the actual task, the operator is fully engaged in the process and even is involved in the updating the Standard Practice and risk assessment. We will then take the revised Standard and use this to train new and existing employees.
