I have been asked by a roofing contractor if I would review and update their system. I have never been involved in roofing work and have never reviewed a system of an organisation from a outside perspective. I will be looking at their policy to see if it reflects current practise Carry out a health and safety inspection, Look at risk assessments. > Is there anything I should look for specifically in relation to a roofing contractor ? > How would you personally go about tackling this job i.e how would you look at the system and current documents in place. I know the person who has done most of their health and safety for them and he is quite a good consultant. But the business owner has fallen out with him and I don’t think they have had much done over the last couple years. This brings me on to cost ? I am not sure how much to charge him ? I am looking forward to doing this but would like to go into this with a good grounding. I have worked for a contractor for 5 years, Grad IOSH status just in case any one would like to know. Thanks

Safezone I think that before deciding whether to proceed with this task you should think: (a) Am I competent to perform this task (i.e. is it within my comfort zone); and (b) Do I have the relevant insurance cover Please do not take this as a criticism or doubting of your competence, as that is definitely not intended. I have in the past been asked by a friend to perform some H&S work in a very different industry to the one I currently work in and therefore advise in; this was well out of my comfort zone so I graciously declined. Cheers Steve

smich has provided some v v -good advice you can get somebody who knows the game on board and you can shadow them to gain experience - talk to people in your local IOSH brance / construction branch - a person may do this for their CPD alone so may not charge or you can split the fee ID where you are located as many on this site may be able to help

Surely what is needed is an audit? 'An independent systematic review of systems and processes'? At short notice I'm not sure what you will be able to get hold of, but this would need something like Audit-123 or RoSPA QSA; in the latter case the question set is so detailed you could probably do an accurate evaluation without an in-depth knowledge of the environment, as long as you have a good knowledge of H&S, which as a Grad you will. Problem is it takes a week's residential study and is very expensive, John
