All good options - however in the current climate I would consider other course aspects as well.

A business understanding is vital to broaden and increase the value of your advice so perhaps consider adding to your portfolio of knowledge by undertaking some type of business course, finance - HR - communications or marketing courses would also be of value.

Similarly psychology and its uses have also provided me with some interesting moments so perphaps another area to consider.

For real personal development that may include an element of the suggestions I have made how about developing your learning skills by undertaking a learning qualification. I know if you wish to teach that a very desirable qualification to have in a PETLLS course. Similarly I know of many SP’s who are completing the Certificate of Education, which is broader based and would certainly broaden your portfolio of knowledge. (Advantage here for the CertEd is you can get a grant from your LEA to do this if you are in a teaching environment or can prove a teaching element of your role and will allow you to enter FE HE education if that is where your career path takes you intentionally or accidentally).
I would imagine that any Training the Trainer Course PTLLS or CertEd course will also keep on providing you with considerable opportunities to fulfil your CPD needs.

For example the Cert Ed may provide you additionally with:

Enhanced personal learning skills
Develop your understanding of learning skills
How to motivate learners
How to give effective learning presentations
How to set up classrooms for total involvement
How to set learning objectives
Different techniques for assessment
Setting assessments designing question sets
Classroom questioning during training
Using different teaching methods skills teaching for example
Report writing skills
Understanding of organisational theory and its application
Introduction to finance management
Personal organisational skills

All these skills whilst aligned to classroom learning can also be used and developed in other contexts

Chris Hi,

I’m in almost exactly the same position having got my NVQ4 in May which of course brought with it Grad IOSH. Everyone is of course different and this may not help but the route I choose,

Completed NVQ 4 in May
Completed pre entry modules for Strathclyde’s Post Grad Dip.
Had a few months spare so did the Uni. of Bath Core Environmental management course which gives you the AIEMA membership and a very broad grounding on some of the environmental aspects (Its one of my weak areas)
October I start the PG Dip with Strathclyde for a year.

One other point, on advice of colleagues I deferred following the chartered route with IOSH until I’ve finished the PG Dip, as I didn’t want to be trying to do the open book and dip at the same time.

Finally the plan is maybe a PG Dip in Environmental management probably with Derby but that decision is a year or so away yet and there’s a lot can go wrong in between.

All the above add up to CPD. I’m lucky that my current cycle finishes in November so the PG Dip should count substantially towards the next cycle.

Following Tim’s comments the training and educators courses all good and again something that passed my mind, but not really for me as I’ve kind of had my fill of Training as a medic and prefer the more hands on approach….

I think the phrase horses for courses comes to mind, whats going to be most benificial in your day to day activities, I chose the environmental couse specifically because I knew it was a weak area but one which is increasingly filling my day. The PG Dip was a moment of madness when I was on a high from finishing the NVQ4 - whether I have the ability to do it or not will remain to be seen.....

The above may not help but might give you a couple of avenues to explore…..

Best Wishes for now

Ian

Chris,
I would agree with Tim, certain vocational qualification can be attractive to an employer. I note that Tim has suggested a Cert Ed, well I wish I had that qualification, I only got as far a City & Guilds Further Educational Teachers Certificate via night school, but it was the reason I got my first health & safety position. The director who interviewed me later said that "the extra string to the bow made all the difference". One word of caution that I would offer is that you have to consider the needs of employers in your chosen sector, given the information provided this appears to be construction. Here I have to say that I can not claim any experience so I am hesitant to offer any advise other than to say give it a lot of thought. The construction sector may be different but Safety Practitioner who can work within the environment does appear to attract attention from employers. Hope this helps.

Hello

Have you considered the new Masters course at Nottingham Trent University, which allows you to do environmental management, H&S, CSR, BCM and health and wellbeing. You get to pick and choose the modules which suit you and what you want to do. Also it's flexible blended learning so you can do it at your own pace and without going to Nottingham every week. If you're interested I've added the website address so you can have a look.http://www.ntu.ac.uk/apps/pss/courses/cf/97749-1/4/MScPGCertPGDip_Professional_Courses_within_Risk_Management.aspx

Good luck what ever you decide on
Fiona
