Need to speak to anyone in the know on a matter regarding luminescence of marshalling wands (perhaps someone from the Aerospace and Aviation Group?) - grateful if anyone with any experience of these items could PM me. Many thanks

Hi Tigger16 I don't deal with these items personally, but if no one else contacts you let me know and Ill see if I can put you in touch with someone who does. Alternatively, we are launching our airside safety DVD at the RAF Museum at Hendon, this Thursday which would be an ideal networking opportunity. I know there are some airfield ops personnel attending. See the IOSH AAG pages for more information on the event. Brgds Rod IOSH AAG Web Champion

I do use these on occasion but am not aware of any specific luminescence value. The only BS that we use is 5501 but this for the intrinsic safety of the wand.

Thanks for the replies - I am of the opinion that there is no specific luminescence requirement (CAP 393 doesn't make any ref) although it appears that there is a chinese whisper out there that is making people think there is a requirement. Thanks for the invite Rob -cant be there but hope all goes well for you all.

BS 5501 part 1 and part 7 are the only reference to standards I can find for these. Might be worth contacting the Civil Aviation Authority to see if they can shed any light (no pun intended) on the required luminesence.

Qouting from East Midlands Airport Aerodrome Manual... Standard marshalling signals, as laid down in Rule 47 of the 'Rules of the Air Regulations 2007', are to be used in all instances. By day any such signals shall be given by circular bats and at night by illuminated wands with a minimum luminosity of 30 candela. Hope this helps.
