I noticed today that my local shopping mall have now got free standing 'market stall' type outlets within their circulation routes. Each stall sells different item such as cuddly toys, calendars and (of all things) nuts. In a bored moment (when Mrs M was browsing), I noticed that each stall had a self contained sprinkler device under each canopy. It consisted of a red cylinder, perhaps capable of storing 4 to 6 litres of water (presumably under pressure), which was slung horizontally under the stalls canopy and above the goods. Protruding from the bottom of the cylinder was (what looked like) a standard sprinkler head with glass bulb. It's clear that this device is similar to a stored pressure extinguisher with a sprinkler head screwed into the side which would provide a limited capability on a mobile barrow/stall within the shopping centre. It had the words Aqua and Auto in the name written on the side, but I was unable to study it more as the stall holder was getting agitated at all the attention and sideways I was giving him!!!!! Can anyone help me determining what this device was and where I can read a little more about it, as I have never seen one before

I have since found this which is very similar to the one I refer to above (despite it being vertically no horizontally arranged) However I would still like to know more about any other types of self contained sprinkler units if anyone can help http://www.fireman247.com/ProductCeaseFire.aspx

We use Aquamist sprinklers in some of our properties and these are self contained and work well. Not sure if they do anything as small as the devices you are describing but they do work off small stored pressure cylinders. www.aqua-mist.co.uk

I have had dealings with Aquamist in the past when I worked briefly for a company that makes printing presses. Basically the unit produces a fine mist of water to smother a fire rather than drench it. It's the same principle as "that rain that wets you through" as Peter Kay would say, drizzle in other words. The company I worked for used them in the folder units where there was a high volume of paper dust generated and thus a high potential for fires.
