I have in the past trained the safety reps myself then mentored them and then provided them with Working safely once they had a basic understanding and knew that they wanted to continue in the role. I used to do a days course, cover off the HSAW 74 Management regs, puwer, risk assessment, fire etc highlighting the particular problems that we faced in the warehouse.

Lee, have you considered involving the union? If you did so the TUC would provide all the relevant training required. No offence to Poots2030, but a days training isn't sufficient for this demanding role.

Lee, Do you mean Safety Representatives (elected by the union members) or Representatives of Safety ( where the company does not have a union and the employees "elect" their RoS) or a mixture of both? If the former then my experience has been that the union will provide the majority of the training, the company has to provide the opportunity to attend the courses. If RoS then the company must provide the time and the resource to train them. The type of industry and the hazards you face will dictate what needs to be known. If you go on the HSE website you can download Consulting workers on health & safety L146 which is the ACOP & Guidance for the Safety Reps 1977 and Consultation Regs 1996, this should help. Take Care
