Hi,
CDM applies to construction work which includes renovation, repair, upkeep, redecoration and cleaning of any building and other structures (defined in the Regs). If the work is expected to last for more than 30 working days or 500 person days then there are additional requirements and the project is notifiable to the HSE. Chapter and verse in document L144. If you haven’t already got L144 its freely available on the HSE website at:

I am pleased to see such as simple, straightforward and accurate response to this often asked question. There still seems to some confusion that the duration of the project determines whether CDM applies or not. Since the 'construction welfare regs' were 'incorporated' into CDM, ALL construction work (as defined pretty clearly in the regs and ACoP) falls under CDM regardless of the length of the project (or the cost!!!!). As Stephen has already said, additional duties apply for longer projects.
