I have worked as health and safety officer in the past. However I did not pursue a career in health and safety; I now have a Masters degree in Human Resources Management, and also want to do a course in health and Safety as part of my CPD and to obtain IOSH membership that will enable me function as part of health and safety team and be able to update my orgainisation's health and safety policies and ensure their implementation.
Please I want to know what qualification is the right one for me. I am considering between Iosh Managing Safely and the Nebosh certification.
Please advise.

Morning Solomon,
If you want IOSH membership then the minimum quliafication level you need is the NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent such as the BSC Certificate. Managing safely is, strictly speaking, not a qualification at all, it is an awareness course. A level 3 certificate (such as NEBOSH) in H&S will allow you to start a process finishing in TechIOSH: you need a certain level of experience and a CPD record as well as the qualification. There is further information on this page: http://www.iosh.co.uk/me...mbership_categories.aspx

Hello Solomon,
Having just attended the 4 day Iosh managing health and safety course, I have to admit the course was a little basic when viewing it from a post nebosh prospective, I assume the course is purposely designed for those climbing the management ladder who may have received promotion into a more responsible role within their organisation who may be seeking a starting point in managing H&S,don't get me wrong the course is beneficial but only for beginners as I have found out by chatting to my fellow delegates, therefore as it sounds from your back ground you may find the Iosh M/S course a little beneath you.
I strongly advise that the Nebosh general certificate is definitely a starting point for some one with a Masters with no other H&S qualifications.
Good luck in your endeavours!!

Personally i would say that the NEBOSH should be your first port of call, if you can pass the National Construction Certificate, then i feel that what you are intending to acheive would be within your grasp!

Hi
Perhaps a good place to start would be at the beginning, the IOSH MS to be honest with your qualifications may appear to be easy but I would personally advise you start at the beginning and work your way up, afterall it's got to look better on your CV in the long term. I am aware of a few companies that deliver the course by elearning so a few days and it can be done from the comfort of your own home or office. Drop me a line if you want further information from me.

Hi Solomon
I agree with "Duck", start at the beginning and work your way up – if you have the time and if this is really what you want to do.
The IOSH MS is a very basic awareness course however; I think it is the perfect “kick-start” to anyone thinking of going down the H&S route. It is a little sample of what is to come. You may find the course frustrating in the beginning but, in my opinion I would prefer to start with a simple basic course that would give me confidence that I was on the right career choice.
I think if you went straight for the NEBOSH you might think “What have I let myself in for?” and turn you off H&S completely.
I am taking baby steps at the moment, my plan so far has been
- IOSH Managing Safely
- First aider & Fire warden
- Other courses such as fire risk assessments, DSE
- NEBOSH
- Manual handling train the trainer
I have achieved the above in the last 2 years. I hope to start my DipOSH next year.
There is no way I could have started straight with NEBOSH without doing the other basic courses first, I think I would have sank big time.
You mentioned that you have worked as a H&S officer in the past so depending on your experience maybe you do not need the IOSH Managing Safely but, it really would be a good refreshers course to get you back “on track”, it is only 4 days and if your company will pay for it then why not?
Whatever you do, I wish you all the best.
If you need any help or advice please PM me.
Stay safe
Lorna

Gents,
my question is similar to Solomon's. I am working in offshore oil&gas industry as a safety officer. My company suggested to pay for my ICertOSH course. I can not understand the difference between the NEBOSH IGC and the one mentioned above. Can I be considered as a H&S practitioner by a potential employer holding it and is ICertOSH considered as an occupational H&S certificate?
Thank you kindly on advance for your answers.
