Should a stairlift installation be compliant with the Machine Directive 2006/42/EC? If compliance is required -which parts of the directive should the stairlift be compliant with?

The assembly (as supplied for installation) must be compliant, not each individual installation. This is not "incomplete" machinery for the purposes of the Directive, rather it is a previously type-tested system, to be assembled on site. The Directive refers to provision of suitable information and instructions for safe installation, maintenance and use and the adequacy of that information would also be a consideration of the type approval process.

I agree as above.
After installation, the lift will required to be tested in accordance with manufactures recommendations. LOLER also has to be considered. Thorough examination after installation (reg.9(2))

Hi Andrew.
check out the EN81-40 Specification for powered stairlifts. this replaced the previous BS spec.
In my experience, you will want to check the lift is installed by trained technicians, and has been installed and tested inaccordance with manufacturers instructions. I have also found some manufacturers who claim that their lifts conforms to the machinery directive and EN81-40, but when you sit down with a copy of both regs, the lifts fall short of complying with both regulations.
