Anyone out there currently working in schools and have a new regime regarding wheelchair users?
The Act has been in for just about one month now and I wonder if it has had any effect or if it will in future?
Points like:
Accessibility to class/school,
Transport to outside functions,
Adjustments when at outside functions,
Independence,
Reasonable adjustments,
Fire and emergency planning,
Thanks

FAQs at the site referenced below suggest some of these issues are still up for debate Chris. Whilst September 2011 is given as an implementation date, I wouldn't be surprised if that drags out a bit, particulary given the current pressures in LA budgets.

Thanks Ron,
copied from that link - The Equality Act places a duty on schools to provide what are called auxiliary aids or services for disabled children where it is reasonable to do so. But these provisions are not being commenced on 1 October, because it is a brand-new requirement and schools and local authorities need time to plan for implementation.
Fair enough but now I would like to know what are "auxiliary aids or services?"

As a wheelchair user myself I see the new act as putting a lot of extra pressure on the service providers to end some of the rather spurious assessments of reasonable adaptations contained in the previous legislation. As far as out of school activity I see again a pressure on these providers being made greater. Yes it will cost money but from my perspective it is money that should already have been spent!!
